Our Story

First Things First — Let Us Introduce Ourselves

Mantenga Lifestyle & Craft Centre is the oldest centre in Eswatini, having been set up as an aid project to boost the development of the Swazi handicraft market in 1975 — which makes it a fairly solid 48 years of age and counting. It has since expanded and moved across the road to where it sits today, famously 'under The Big Tree'.

Coincidentally, the road it crossed to get here is named Tivakashi Street. Tivakashi means "tourist" or "visitor" in Siswati — and it is entirely apt, as every business on this short street is tourism-focused.

On this side of the road, Mantenga Lifestyle & Craft Centre has begun a new and exciting chapter — attracting a remarkable mix of owner-run, independent enterprises from a wide range of crafts, culinary backgrounds and creative disciplines. It is this breadth of skill and talent, gathered in one place, that makes the centre such a rewarding and distinctive destination.

Did you know? Tivakashi (tee-vah-KAH-shee) is the Siswati word for "tourist" or "visitor." Every business on Tivakashi Street exists to welcome you — and Mantenga Lifestyle & Craft Centre has been doing exactly that since 1975.

🚌

Tour Operators, Bus Groups & FIT Travellers — You Are Welcome Here

Mantenga Lifestyle & Craft Centre is a well-established stop on tour itineraries across Eswatini. We welcome bus groups, guided tours and independent travellers from France, the Netherlands, Germany, the UK, the USA, Australia, South Africa, Mozambique and beyond. Our food court can accommodate large groups, and our artisan shops offer an authentic shopping experience that passengers love.

For advance arrangements, group catering, or to plan a visit — contact Zanele who is always on hand at the centre and works closely with tour operators and their travellers. Zanele is based at Rainbow Angels and knows the centre inside out.

What Makes Us Unique

Eat, Shop, Experience — All in One Place

Mantenga Lifestyle & Craft Centre is not a shopping mall, not a food court, and not a craft market — it is all three, woven together under a canopy of trees in a way that feels entirely Eswatini. Here is what makes us different:

🍽

One Table, Four Kitchens

Sit down at one table under The Big Tree and order from multiple restaurants at the same time. Italian wood-fired pizza, smoked meats, Portuguese baking, authentic local Eswatini cuisine — and drinks from The Wine Boutique for everyone. Your whole group can each choose something completely different. No compromise necessary. This is a genuinely unique dining experience you will not find anywhere else in the region.

🎨

Made in Eswatini — Authentically

Every craft and retail shop in the centre is owner-run by local artisans and entrepreneurs. Hand-crafted gold and silver jewellery, original wood sculpture, beadwork, leather goods, African luxury fashion, handmade soft animals and gifts — almost everything is made locally, by local hands. This is not imported curio trade. When you buy here, you are supporting Swazi talent and Swazi livelihoods directly.

🌍

Real Life Under The Big Tree

Sitting at a table under The Big Tree, you are not in a tourist bubble. You are in the middle of ordinary Ezulwini life — local families, international travellers, artisans at work, music drifting across from the food court. This is where Eswatini comes to eat, meet and unwind. This is authentic Africa at its most relaxed and most welcoming. Come and be part of it.

🤝

We champion local, independent businesses — not large corporates. Every tenant at Mantenga Lifestyle & Craft Centre is a small, owner-run enterprise. Artisans, craftspeople, chefs and makers who have built their businesses from the ground up, and who are deeply invested in the community around them. When you spend money here, it goes directly into the hands of the people who made or cooked what you are buying — and into the broader fabric of Eswatini's local economy. That is something worth choosing.

The Centre

Three Spaces, One Destination

The Mantenga Lifestyle & Craft Centre is spread across three distinct areas. The heart of the experience — and the focus of this website — is the first.

01
Under The Tree ★
The soul of Mantenga Lifestyle & Craft Centre. The food court, all four restaurants, and the full complement of artisan craft and retail shops are gathered here — surrounding The Big Tree in a courtyard that buzzes from morning until late evening. This is where visitors eat, shop, browse and linger. Everything described in the "Our Community" section below is located here, unless otherwise noted.
02
The Shed
A more business-oriented space, home to a mix of enterprises including the Margaret Bennett Charity Association — a charity operating from within the centre. The Shed serves both the local business community and the wider Mantenga area.
03
The Creative Space
A hub for creative and specialist businesses, including a small bead art workshop alongside a logistics company and other independent enterprises. The Creative Space is also home to Umuhle Mbamba — an earring design and craft studio that operates by appointment. See the Fashion & Accessories tab in the "Our Community" section for details.

The People Behind the Place

Our Community

Browse by category to find each business, their story and contact details. Unless noted, all businesses are located in Under The Tree. Retail hours are approximately 9am–5pm daily; restaurants open from 7am until 10pm.

What really sets The Smoke & Grill apart is Sipho's traditional Eswatini lunch menu, available on weekdays.
